what type of sleep do we need to recover?

I'm not asking how much sleep necessarily, but i am asking what type of sleep do we need? like i know i need 8 hours of sleep to boost my gains and recovery from a workout, but i rarely can go a solid 8 hours. do we really need to be in a deep REM sleep for that full 8 hours or can i do like 6 hours of deep sleep and be good?
 
there is no black and white answer as everyone is different.

if your goal is fitness you want to get plenty of sleep. even a nap after a workout is your best way to recover and repair the body
 
You can check out a tracker like Fitbit which will show you some benchmarks as far as different parts of the sleep cycle. There is a balance of light, deep, REM, and awake time that you want during your sleep. These are just benchmarks though and everyone is different.
