potatoes

I am confused when it comes to potatoes some people say that potatoes are bad because they are a starch and they have too much sugar in them and carbohydrates other say that potatoes are good for you cuz they have a lot of vitamins and minerals what is your position?

Over the holidays I had a lot of mashed potatoes but it was from white potatoes and there was a lot of butter and milk added which did a number on my stomach and also bloated me. I want to try doing sweet potatoes mashed up. Any tips on how you do them? Do I need to add anything to make them...
