Steroid Receptors
Let's start at the top. How steroids are able to give us the desired effects is, in fact, via two methods of action. According to NIH.Gov:
Steroids can act through two basic mechanisms: genomic and non-genomic. The classical genomic action is mediated by specific intracellular receptors, whereas the primary target for the non-genomic one is the cell membrane. Many clinical symptoms seem to be mediated through the non-genomic route.
So already the the idea of steroids receptors being blocked kinda goes out the window. As in even if it was true ASS can and still will work.
Why being lean, eating clean and having a healthy lifestyle means more gains/better results
Interestingly enough various possible medical conditions and or their treatments can and do have an effect in steroid sex receptors. An article on ScienceDirect states: Dysregulation of SSR function has been implicated in numerous pathologies including cancers, obesity, Type II diabetes mellitus, neuroendocrine disorders, cardiovascular disease, hyperlipidemia, male and female infertility, and other reproductive disorders. Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) modulate SSR function in a wide variety of cell and tissues. There exists strong experimental, clinical, and epidemiological evidence that engagement of EDCs with SSRs may disrupt endogenous hormone signaling leading to physiological abnormalities that may manifest in disease.
The take away from that is BE HEALTHY if you wanna get the absolute best from AAS use. That means fit, lean and with as healthy a lifestyle and diet as you can.
Site injecting steroids
According to healthunit.org there is little to no point of injecting AAS into a muscle with the aim of that muscle bigger. In other words they are not site specific: Injecting into other muscles such as, pecks or biceps can lead to nerve damage and other harms. Steroids work by traveling in your bloodstream and working with all the muscle cells in your body to grow. Injecting a steroid into the muscle you want to be bigger will not work and could lead to injury or nerve damage.
Now you DO wanna rotate injection sites (less scar tissue etc). But, as was pointed out years ago the most common site for AAS jabs are the glutes. Ergo if site enhancement was possible we'd see mega glutes.
Steroidal effects on thinking
Interestingly enough constant use of steroids has an effect on our fore-brains (explains a lot lol) (ref: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2782625/) : Chronic Exposure to Anabolic Androgenic Steroids Alters Neuronal Function in the Mammalian Forebrain via Androgen Receptor- and Estrogen Receptor-Mediated Mechanisms
Down regulation and 'burnout'
This nut comes up a lot. In fact the science suggests more roids = more roid receptors. Now that is NOT an excuse to go out and use grams more gear. Because the opposite also applies. In other words when you cycle off and or stop using steroids the body will lessen the amount you have. Now, as we well know (for the most part) you still got stimulate muscle growth, you still gotta rest and you still gotta feed them. If you have average genetics you MUST train harder and then using a little more will be that little bit more effective. It's NOT (although the opening phrase makes it seem that way) just keep X, Y and Z the same but take more AAS. Because many such articles ignore the actions of X, Y and Z (training, rest and nutrition). Unfortunately those with better genetics wont have to work quite as hard - thems the breaks.
