getting challenged in the gym

I thought this story was funny. I was lifting the other day and I kept increasing my bench weight and the guy next to me would do the same, it got to the point where we were competing against each other. has this ever happened to you? the guy would get pissed when i would lift more than him and add more weight. in the end i smiled and threw up 250 and he shut up and left.

Yea it happened to me, the more weight I squat the more weight the guy next to me squats. It's all related to guys wanting to be the biggest.
 
Its only happened to me while warming up until they realized I was warming up with their working weight
 
this story is a perfect example of how a gym environment can motivate and push you. it is no different then running with someone who is a bit faster than you, they will push you to get better and get you over the hump. it is called pacing with someone.

i can give you more examples. look at the NFL. players that train on their own in the offseason vs. training with their teammates.

i hate training at home, i love a good gym environment. i really miss some of the meathead gyms i have worked out at over the course of my life. those were always the best. for economic reasons those are dying out, we are left with the franchise gyms that charge monthly to people who don't show up. a meathead gym regulars show up all the time and wear the place out. it really has no economic practicality
 
I've seen certain people watch me during my work out and start doing the same movements im doing, its nothing major it could be motivation for that person or they like your look and try 2 train how you are training
