An American woman who tried to circumcise her three-month-old son with a box-cutter after watching YouTube videos on the procedure has been sentenced to five years' probation and a psychological examination.
Portland woman Keemonta Peterson said she was inspired by the Old Testament in deciding to have her son circumcised but she feared doctors would refuse because he was too old.
She watched YouTube videos on how to perform a circumcision and tried to carry out the procedure on her infant son last October using box cutters, which caused him immense pain and heavy bleeding, Multnomah County Circuit Court heard.
Peterson pleaded guilty to first-degree criminal mistreatment earlier this year, The Oregonian newspaper reports.
"The reality is you love your children and had absolutely no intent to harm your child," judge Eric Bergstrom told Peterson at the hearing yesterday.
Her son has made a full recovery and is now living with his three siblings in foster care.
Peterson is allowed to visit her children under supervision.
