The key is to drop cals slowly when beinning a diet. That overall calorie intake woule be low for me - I'd drop weight too fast and end up skinny. I wouldn't be afraid to up your fat intake...

Narrow grip (as opposed to wide grip) pulldowns/pullups actually allow your lats a greater range of motion.
Also try pure negative pullups. They see to really fry the lower lats.
Obviously can't argue with his training style but it does amaze me how loose him form is. He uses momentum tremendously in all his exercises with no emphasis on the negative portion of the movement...
