Hey guys. Probably my first time posting in the powerlifting forum but I figured this would be the most appropriate place.
When should a guy start to use knee wraps? At what point should a guy look into protecting his knees? What should I look for in a knee wrap? I'm squatting 4 plates a side for reps and can do 5 plates for a few reps. My knees aren't bother me but I just recently started using a weight belt so that added like 20-25lbs to my squat. Since I'm getting stronger some of the older vets at my gym said that I should pick up a belt and some knee wraps to prevent injury. Blow out a knee and you're not going to be squatting, rowing, walking, or anything lol. |

I would suggest a knee sleeve before you use wraps. TK Knee Bands seem to be better for support and heat, instead of wraps. Wraps press on the patella and kind of compress everything a bit too much to use them all the time if you ask me. They will give you support and a little bounce out of the bottom if you are taking say 90% of your max or more, but as for weekly use, I would suggest TK Bands instead as they seem to give good support and heat, without weakening the knee through excessive use.
If you wanted to get knee wraps I would go with the basic plain 2 M jane strangulators from apt. Here are the links, hope this helps APT Pro Gear - TK Knee Bands Tommy Kono Knee Bands support APT Pro Gear - STRANGULATOR 2m, 2.5m & 3m with & without velcro Knee Wraps |

Coach have you used inzer ironz the red and black wraps?
Are the apt pro gear a better wrap? Inzer Advance Designs: Iron Wraps Z-The most powerful, most popular, most effective knee wrap in the world! I agree sleeves mainly to keep heat in the joint offer mild support. But if your looking to a lot of support then go with wraps. |

Yeah, I've used the Iron Z. They aren't bad, I've used APT strangulators and Metal all black wraps. I like the metal ones best, but strangulators are about middle of the road as far as price, and still a high quality product.

APT has the knee sleeves by Rehband. They are the sleeves worn by pretty much all the strongmen. (They wear the older style that are blue). A little pricey, but they are top quality and well worth it IMO.

I asked a similar question a while back Data and I ended up getting the TK Knee sleeves and I tell you, I LOVE them. My knees were taking a hard pounding from doing heavy farmers walk and now if I do any squats, or training with the farmers, I wear the sleeves and it makes a world of difference. Hell, I even wore one of them on the bad knee when we did a hike in the Niagara gorge and what a difference.
As for "WHEN" you should start using something, I wish I started before they started to hurt, so maybe look into getting them now.... |
